1 CHRONICLES 28:9-10; 20

INTRODUCTION

There are many great men and women of God found in the pages of Scripture.

As we study the lives of these various individuals, we find some common characteristics in their lives:

1.           They Were All People Of Grace–God’s Grace!

(i.e. They were great because God made them great!)

1 Corinthians 15:9-10–“9For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.”

2.           They Were All People Of Purpose–God’s Purpose!

(i.e. Because of God’s grace in their lives, they purposed to live their lives for God!)

Daniel 1:8–“But Daniel purposed in his heart. . .”

Paul said that on the Damascus road, Jesus told him, Acts 26:16–“But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;”

3.           They Were All People Of Faith–Faith In God!

(i.e. They understood that a life pleasing to God must be lived by faith, not by sight.)

Hebrews 11:6–“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

We know that David, who became King Of Israel and who is known as “The Sweet Psalmist of Israel” and also known as “The Man After God’s Own Heart,” is just one of these great men of God..

David was a man who had experienced God’s grace in his life!

David was a man who had lived God’s purposes in his life!

David was a man who had lived a life of faith!

Here we see David giving instruction to Solomon, his son, whom God had chosen to ascend the throne in David’s place. Thus, Solomon was “graduating” so to speak to the next level in his life and David was giving him some important instruction necessary to be a success in what God had called him to do.

I.           DAVID’S INSTRUCTION TO HIS SON!

              A.        KNOW THE GOD OF THY FATHER! (Vs 9a)

                          1.         David Had Known God By Both Acquaintance And Experience.

                                      a.         He Had Experienced The Salvation Of The Lord.

Psalm 25:5–“Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”

                                      b.        He Had Experienced Sweet Fellowship With The Lord.

Many Psalms record that fellowship that he experienced.

                                      c.         He Had Experienced The Blessings Of The Lord.

He went from being a lowly shepherd boy to being God’s chosen King of Israel.

                                      d.        He Had Experienced The Deliverance Of The Lord.

God had delivered him from the lion, the bear, Goliath, and from the hand of Saul and other enemies just to mention a few.

                                      e.         He Had Experienced The Chastening Of The Lord.

In the matter of his sins of adultery and murder God had dealt with him.

                                      f.         He Had Experienced The Forgiveness Of The Lord.

As he confessed his sin to the Lord and turned his heart back to God, the Lord forgave him.

And although there were some dire consequences he suffered because of his sin, nevertheless his fellowship with God was restored!

David Had Known God By Both Acquaintance And Experience.

                          2.         David Knew The Importance Of Knowing God.

I believe that is why he mentions it first.

There is no doubt that David had some regrets about not knowing God as he should. Nevertheless, He knew God by experience!

Oh, my friend, God wants us to know Him!

KNOW THE GOD OF THY FATHER!

              B.        SERVE HIM WITH A PERFECT HEART AND WITH A WILLING MIND. (Vs 9b)

The word “serve” involves doing something!

It involves work! God is not looking for spectators!

                          1.         Serve Him With A Perfect Heart.

                                      The word “perfect” means “complete.”

                                      God demands complete devotion!

God wants you to serve Him with your whole heart!

                                      Give him your whole heart!

                          2.         Serve Him With A Willing Mind.

The word “willing” means “pleased with.”

Have a heartfelt desire to serve God with your life and be pleased that God would allow you to serve Him!

              DAVID’S INSTRUCTION TO HIS SON!

II.         DAVID’S REASONING FOR KNOWING AND SERVING GOD! (Vs 9c)

              A.        The Lord Searcheth All Hearts.

                          1.         That Means He Knows Those Who Belong To Him.

                          2.         That Means He Knows The Secret Sin.

                          3.         That Means He Knows The Motives Of Our Heart.

B.He Understands All The Imaginations Of The Thoughts.

                          1.         He Understands Our Feelings About Ourselves.

                          2.         He Understands Our Feelings About Others.

                          3.         He Understands Our Feelings About Himself.

III.        DAVID’S WARNING TO HIS SON. (Vs 9d)

              David in essence is saying,

“Son, if you seek God, you’ll find Him! But if you don’t want anything to do with Him, He’ll not have anything to do with you!”

IV.        DAVID’S CHALLENGE TO HIS SON. (Vs 10)

Take heed now! (i.e. Its time to get down to business! This is no time to be playing around!)

              A.        God Has A Will For Your Life! (Vs 10)

He was telling Solomon, “God has chosen you for a high purpose and calling!”

That’s true for each of us!

                          1.         God Wants Us To Know Him!

                          2.         God Wants Us To Serve Him!

                          3.         God Wants Us To Find His Will For Our Life!

                          4.         God Wants Us To Do His Will!

              B.        Be Strong. (Vs 10, 20)

                          1.         God Wants Us To Be A Follower When We Need To Be A Follower.

Solomon was to follow the leadership of the Lord who would be with him.

We are to follow those God has placed over us!

Hebrews 13:7–“Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.”

                          2.         God Wants Us To Be A Leader When We Need To Be A Leader.

1 Timothy 4:12–“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

              C.        Be Of Good Courage. (Vs 20)

There is the need to guard our emotions! Don’t let yourself get discouraged and quit on the Lord! Satan and his forces will do everything they can to try to discourage us in the work of the Lord!

              D.        Do It! (Vs 10, 20)

Don’t make excuses! Don’t look for a way out!

Do God’s will today! Obey God today!

Determine to obey God today while today is here.

Realize that it may be the last day you have on this earth.

If God allows tomorrow come for you, determine to obey and do God’s will tomorrow.

V.          DAVID’S ENCOURAGEMENT TO HIS SON. (Vs 20)

              A.        Fear Not Nor Be Dismayed! (Vs 20)

David was telling Solomon not to be frightened about the size of the task God had given him.

Fear can immobilize us! The size of a job, the risks involved with doing it, or the pressure of all that’s involved in getting the job accomplished can cause us to freeze and do nothing.

              B.        For The LORD God, Even My God, Will Be With Thee!

                          1.         God Will Be With You!

                          2.         God Will Not Fail You!

                          3.         God Will Not Forsake You!

                          4.         Finish Your Course!

Conclusion

Listen, its time for us to take heed now, too!

God wants us to know Him intimately and fervently serve Him completely and willingly!

When it comes to what He has called us to do, He wants us to be strong and of good courage, and just do what He’s called us to do. Just do it!

We are not to fear or be dismayed because God will be with us and will not fail us or forsake us until we’ve finished our course here on this earth!
