INDICATIONS THAT REVIVAL IS NEEDED

JEREMIAH–VARIOUS PASSAGES

Introduction

Jeremiah the prophet was called of God to carry forth the message to Judah of impending judgment.

Judah had experienced somewhat of a Revival during the 31 year reign of good King Josiah. There had been a form of repentance in the nation, but it was a shallow repentance and after King Josiah was off the scene thing quickly turned away from God again. Judah was in need of a real Revival!

As we look at the life of the prophet Jeremiah, society’s standards would say that he was a miserable failure at what he was doing. For 40 years he spoke; but when he spoke, nobody listened. Not only did they not listen, but they ridiculed him and persecuted him.

Consistently and passionately he urged them to act to avoid the judgment of God, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.

In Jeremiah’s message to Judah, I believe that we find the things that indicate when revival is needed.

I.         WHEN OTHER THINGS IN OUR LIFE TAKE THE PLACE THAT RIGHTLY BELONGS TO GOD. (i.e. Idolatry) (Jeremiah 1:16; 2:5-7, 11-13, 17, 19, 28)

II.       WHEN LESSONS IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS ARE BEING IGNORED BY US.

            (Jeremiah 3:6-10)

III.      WHEN WE ARE DETERMINED TO DO EVIL RATHER THAN GOOD.

            (Jeremiah 4:22)

IV.      WHEN WE FAIL TO EXERCISE GOOD JUDGMENT OR SEEK THE TRUTH.

            (Jeremiah 5:1; 9:3)

V.        WHEN WE REFUSE GOD’S DEALINGS IN OUR OWN LIVES.

            (i.e. We Become Hard-Hearted) (Jeremiah 5:3)

            A. We Refuse To Receive Rebuke And Correction. (Jeremiah 5:3)

            B.        We Fail To Acknowledge The Chastening Hand Of God.

                        (Jeremiah 5:4, 9-12)

            C.        We Lose Our Fear Of The LORD. (Jeremiah 5:22-25)

            D.        We Want To Have Our Ears Tickled Rather Than Our Sin Addressed.

                        (Jeremiah 5:29-31)

            E.        The Word Of God Becomes A Reproach Instead Of A Delight.

                        (Jeremiah 6:10)

By “reproach” I mean that it is an object of contempt, scorn, or derision.

            F.        We Refuse To Return To The Old Paths. (Jeremiah 6:16)

            G.       We Refuse To Listen To The Man Of God. (Jeremiah 6:17; 7:25-28)

            H.       We Walk In The Counsels And Imagination Of A Heart That Is Not Right With God. (Jeremiah 7:23-24)

            I.         Our Direction Is Backward, Not Forward. (Jeremiah 7:24)

VI.      WHEN OUR LIVES ARE CAUGHT UP IN COVETOUSNESS. (Jeremiah 6:13)

VII.     WHEN THERE IS NO SHAME TO OUR SIN. (Jeremiah 6:15)

Conclusion

Do we need Revival? Could I tell you that as much as Judah needed Revival, we need Revival.

Jeremiah 9:23-24; 18:7-9

The prescription for Revival has not changed.

2 Chronicles 7:14–“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Isn’t it time we got serious about the matter of Revival?
