THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST

PART 2--HIS PURPOSE

2 JOHN 7-11

Introduction

From our text here in 2 John 7-11, we can see that the doctrine of Christ is of utmost importance!

For two weeks we have looked at the doctrine of Christ surrounding His Person. (Colossians 1:15-20)

We saw His Person, His Position, His Power, His Preexistence, His Preeminence, His Plenitude, And His Peace–all pointing to the fact that yes, He was a man. However, it shows Him to be more than just a man–He is in fact the God-man.

There are many people today who look at the story of Jesus’ life as a tragic story. The reason for that is because they not only fail to see His Person, but they also fail to see His Purpose.

Ephesians 3:11 speaks of “the eternal purpose which He [God] purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

When Jesus came to this earth, He not only came as the God-man, but He came on purpose and with purpose. And further, He fulfilled the purpose for which He came!

Why did Jesus come to this earth and go through all that He went through while He was here? We’ve seen His Person. But what was His Purpose?

I.          HIS PURPOSE WAS TO SHOW US THE FATHER.

John 1:18–“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

John 14:6-11

John 10:30–“I and my Father are one.”

II.         HIS PURPOSE WAS TO DO HIS FATHER’S WILL.

             (Luke 4:16-21)

John 4:34–“Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”

John 6:38–“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”

John 8:29–“. . .for I do always those things that please him.”

Philippians 2:8–“. . .he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

John 17:4–“I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.”

HIS PURPOSE WAS TO SHOW US THE FATHER.

HIS PURPOSE WAS TO DO THE WILL OF THE FATHER.

III.       HIS PURPOSE WAS TO MANIFEST THE LOVE OF GOD.

John 3:16-18–“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

1 John 4:9-10–“In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

IV.       HIS PURPOSE WAS TO SEEK AND TO SAVE THE LOST.

Luke 19:10–“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

John 4:4–“And he must needs go through Samaria.”

2 Corinthians 5:21–“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

John 12:46–“I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.”

John 10:10–“. . .I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

Hebrews 2:15 says that He came to “. . .deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

HIS PURPOSE WAS TO SHOW US THE FATHER., TO DO THE WILL OF THE FATHER., TO MANIFEST THE LOVE OF GOD TO US, TO SEEK AND TO SAVE THE LOST. . ..

V.         HIS PURPOSE WAS TO DESTROY THE DEVIL.

Hebrews 2:14–“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;”

Conclusion

Jesus came to die.

He came to shed His precious blood for you and for me.

He fulfilled His purpose!

What about your purpose? Have you found your purpose for living? If not, maybe you are looking in the wrong place.

When God made man, He made him to fulfill His purpose.

But then sin entered the picture and God had to send His Son Jesus to reconcile man.

God wants men to trust in His finished Work through the Lord Jesus Christ and receive not only salvation, but a renewed purpose in life–To glorify God!
